Imagining a special place

This is like being the director of your own movie. You decide the scene and the action. You will need to include lots of details to make it come alive. Remember your movie is for the purpose of relaxation and distraction for you, so choose a place and activity that your love and feel safe in. You can do this in a chair or lying down.

  • Choose a special place (or activity).
  • Ideas: backyard, beach, waterfall, forest, cooking, walking, your grandmother’s house, etc.
  • Make yourself comfortable so that you can be still. Close your eyes.
  • Begin to imagine.  Start to notice details: what is in your picture (e.g. trees, flowers, ground etc)?  Are there colours, what is above you?  Notice the smells, sounds and textures.
  • Begin to imagine yourself moving through this special place.  What do you encounter?
  • Explore this special place and anything that happens in it.
  • This is the beginning of entering your private dream world.

If you are lying down you may fall asleep.  If not, to come away from your special place, give yourself a few moments to tune into where you are.  Do this by starting to hear the sounds around you and picturing the room or place where you are at this moment.
